I had the privilege of being coached by Matt at the World Masters Championships in Florida in 2022, where I represented NZ. Despite not knowing Matt well, he quickly understood my competition nerves and kept me calm and focused whilst effortlessly managing the board and another lifter in the same session. Not only did Matt provide the technical guidance that I needed during my warmup, he made me laugh and feel at ease in a stressful situation. Working with Matt was one of the highlights of this trip and competition and I wouldn’t hesitate to have him coach me at any event in the future.

After meeting Matt 7 years ago he was always extremely supportive of my weightlifting development Great with anything from beginner skill installation to high level athletes and technical coaching. He uses meaniful and effective cues that make sense and can be implemented immediately. Super responsive to online videos, would highly recommend with in person or online coaching if you are outside the area.

I have been training with Matt for a few months now. Initially went along to ‘try’ one class but was hooked from the start. Matt provides a very inclusive and welcoming environment focusing on small step improvements, which as a ‘master’ makes progression a lot easier. He is very generous with his time and always encouraging – fully focused on the task at hand but at the same time making sure we are having fun. That one visit for me has now turned into two classes a week, PT as well as doing the online programming. Highly recommend no matter how far along in your weightlifting journey you are.

I have known Matt for a few years where I watched Matt overtime compete in weightlifting and this gave me insight into the sport. I never considered weightlifting as sport for me as I was purely focused on CrossFit, but Matt could see potential in me as a lifter. Matt gave me a little “nudge” in February 2023 and since then I have competed and achieved a lot in a small amount of time. We competed at the MM Weightlifting Open and then at the Hills Barbell Open where we achieved a total qualifying me to compete in the Masters World Weightlifting Championship in Poland – something we didn’t consider or was ever on the radar. We went onto NSW Masters Championships where I took first place and achieved the National Record for Snatch and total. Next step we competed at the AWF Masters Championships where we placed third. If it were not for Matt’s encouragement, guidance, and constant belief in me that we could take this sport to the next level, I would never have taken the courage to step outside my comfort zone and take to the platform. I am forever encouraged by Matt to achieve more than I ever dreamed. I will be forever grateful to Matt and Ann for always giving us the space to train amongst likeminded people.

From the beginning of my Weightlifting Journey Matt has been in my corner. In fact, I couldn’t imagine competing without his guidance, as it was Matt who encouraged me to take up the sport to begin with. Coach, dietitian, sports psychologist, mate. Matt is all of these. From writing program, to analysing training footage, to enabling his athletes to believe in what they can achieve, Matt does all of these. MMWH encourages athletes of all abilities and experience. The same time a dedication goes into every lifter competing under the MMWH banner.
